Feeding the baby to sleep (it's magic!), he grinned. Then his whole body shook and he giggled and giggled - but stayed asleep. Soon I was giggling too.
When my little boy gives me that full-on shiner smile, I cannot help but join in. It's infectious!
Unfortunately it also works the other way too. For one reason or another, I have been a grumpy caah today and boy, has my family felt it. Storms outside and in,with a black cloud of snippiness and irritability. Raining on everyone's parade. So I am very sorry for being the cause of this. But, what to do? I know it's nice to be nice but we can't walk around with fake manic grins on all day, can we?!
I find this a quandry but trying to think of what the 'solutions' are...
Perhaps, one method is about trying to seek the opportunities for happiness in a down day - take the tea that's offered and don't complain about the lack of sugar...
Or acknowledging and claiming your mood. Sometimes, I think, when I share 'gosh, I am in a BAD MOOD today' I feel better. Like I have permission to feel bad and now can just get on with it.
Finally, there is probably a place for faking it. They say that if you fake a smile, you make a smile. I know that if I fake being Super-Happy-Fun-Mum-Yeah, then after a while the kids respond in kind, and, before I know it, I am feeling super happy, fun mum. Yeah!
Would love to know your thoughts on not infecting everybody with a bad mood... or should those you love accept it? Still, a quandry.
Try reading this. It worked for me..

Thanks Chris, looks good.
ReplyDeleteIt's a mother's prerogative to be in a bad mood! I find that copious amounts of chocolate helps. I think you're right that sometimes faking a smile, brings on a genuine one. That's my method anyway!
